Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich Updates

Source: HTC blog

Few innovations have improved upon ice cream as much putting it between two cookies and making a sandwich. Which is why we all want Ice Cream Sandwich! Ok, that’s not the real reason, but we’re all excited about Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, coming to HTC.

Here’s the scoop. The following HTC devices are confirmed to get a tasty treat of Ice Cream Sandwich:

DROID Incredible 2 by HTC HTC Amaze 4G HTC Desire S HTC Desire HD HTC EVO 3D HTC EVO Design 4G HTC Incredible S HTC Sensation HTC Sensation XL HTC Sensation 4G HTC Sensation XE HTC Raider HTC Rezound HTC Rhyme HTC Thunderbolt HTC Vivid

As for timing, we’re in the early stages of rolling out Android 4.0 for the HTC Sensation and HTC Sensation XE and upgrades will be more widely available in the next few weeks. The update for the HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XL will follow. Please note, once we start pushing out updates it will take time for all carriers in each country to get the update. We are working closely with our carrier partners to nail down update schedules for our other smartphones and will have more to share very soon.

Huawei Ascend D Quad vs iPhone 4 camera test

The Huawei Ascend D Quad casually sailed into Mobile World Congress and leads Huawei's smart phone fleet as its undisputed flagship. It's packing a powerful quad-core chip, a 720p screen and the latest version of Android.
If it hopes to have a long-term berth in everyone's pockets, it's going to have to deliver in the camera stakes too. To see just what the 8-megapixel snapper can do, I took it for a spin around Barcelona and compared the results to my very own iPhone 4.
I only had a brief hands-on time with the D Quad and I didn't have an iPhone 4S to hand with its improved camera, so the results of the test aren't a scientific conclusion, but it gives a good general idea of how well the new phone performs in the snapping stakes.
The quality settings on both handsets were set to their maximum and all other settings were left on automatic. On the left you'll see the image from the iPhone 4; on the right, the D Quad. Click the images to see the full size versions.

OnLive Desktop Now on Android

By Will765 | Tabletrom

For those iPad users, OnLive has been available for some time, and now it has finally come to android. What is it, exactly? Well, after downloading the app, you basically can use your tablet with a Windows desktop interface. Excel, Internet Explorer, Word, Adobe reader, and Powerpoint are all available with the free version.  You also get 2GB of free cloud storage.  There are paid options also.  For $4.99, you move up to the Plus version, which gives instant access(the free one is as-available, so you may see slowdowns).  Another level, Pro, will set you back $9.99, but increases storage to 50Gb, and lets you customize the desktop with additional apps.

This is the screen you’ll see when you open the app.  For something that works off of remote servers, it is surprisingly fast. Of course, the more people that download and start using it, the slower the free service will become.  However, for now you don’t have to wait for Windows 8 tablets to come out, you can get a taste of windows on your android tablet now.

Google says 850K Android devices activated each day

By Edward C. Baig, USA TODAY
The growth rate for Android continues to accelerate.
Google says 850,000 new Android devices are now being turned on and activated each day, while the current number of active Android smartphones and tablets has topped 300 million. Also, the Android Market has just crossed the 13 billion apps downloads milestone.
At the Mobile World Congress, Android's Director of Product Development Hugo Barra says he expects hundreds of devices running the 4.0 mobile operating system -- nicknamed Ice Cream Sandwich -- to show up soon.

Tablets in 2012

By Will765 | Tablet Roms

Assuming the Mayan doomsday prediction is wrong, what will the tablet landscape look like by the end of this year?  One thing for sure is that a lot of tablets, whether running iOS, android, or Windows 8 will be sold.  Most estimates put the number around 125 million or so for the year.  With Apple set to launch the iPad3, probably in March, expect the usual buying frenzy which accompanies the release of any new Apple product.  Another factor will be the reduction of price for existing iPad models, which will open up their sale to those who are unwilling to pay the high prices now being charged.  One thing is certain, Apple will retain the top spot in tablet sales for at least this coming year.

Android tablets have been, and still are, suffering from one major problem-fragmentation.  So many vendors, with a variety of operating system versions.  Different specifications, with varying screen sizes.  It’s no surprise the public is often confused about android tablets.  Amazon tried to overcome these problems by emphasizing utility over specifications with the Kindle Fire, and it looks to have been a success.  Consumers want something that works, and really don’t care(or understand much) about what’s under the hood of the tablet.  Seven inch tablets seem to be coming more and more popular, with their greater portability and lower prices.   With the launch of Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has begun to consolidate it’s operating system.  One problem is still that manufacturers integrate their own UI over android, which makes it less of a common experience.

One wildcard in the tablet world is whether the Windows 8 tablets prove popular.  Potentially,  the installed base of Windows users could provide a huge market for windows tablets.  The implementation will be a key for the success of such devices.  If  Windows 8 works really well on tablets, many manufacturers will be quick to start producing them.  The corporate world will likely buy large numbers of them, as well as many consumers.  The only drawback is that there are not expected to be many tablets out by the end of 2012. This will allow both android and Apple to continue to expand their influence, and dominance, in the tablet market.  Microsoft may just be getting to the party a little too late.

Ready For Android 5.0?

By Will765 | Tablet Rom

Although the vast majority of android devices haven’t received an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich, android 4.0, rumors are that Google is preparing to release Jelly Bean, it’s next version, in the 2nd quarter of 2012.  Why would the company try to launch it so quickly?  Supposedly, this is in response to the upcoming Microsoft Windows 8.  Optimized for use on touch-screen tablets as well as desktops and laptops, Windows 8 is seen as a real alternative to android as an operating system.  The new android 5.0 is said to be able to dual-boot on tablets and other devices alongside Windows 8, and even to be able to switch operating systems without having to shut down.  Seeing as how ICS came out in November, and yet 3 months later most devices don’t have official updates, even if Jelly Bean comes out between April-June, likely no one will see it until towards the fall.  One thing Google needs to address is the lag time time between releasing it’s new os, and actually seeing it appear on devices.  The vast majority of the delay is due to manufacturers putting their own proprietary software into the new system.  This takes too long to work out all the bugs, and meanwhile the only ones who get the upgraded android are the hackers.  Some Chinese manufacturers have got the right idea, and released tablets with a very vanilla ICS, which have been available since December of 2011.  It would be very annoying if Google releases Jelly Bean before most of us get ICS on our tablets or phones.

-Make sure you have a good charge on your phone. I suggest starting with a full charge.
-From the home screen of your phone press Menu > Settings > Applications > check mark "unknown sources". This will allow you to install Z4Root without an error.
-From the home screen of your phone press Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > check mark "USB debugging". This is necessary for Z4Root to
work.
-You need to go to the market and download Astro File Manager (free)
-You need to download Android Terminal Emulator (free)

If you have problems with the recovery file follow these instructions
the recovery-RA-GNM-OPT-T-test.img.zip won't be available. I used recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img from this link recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img
Just be sure when you are typing in commands for step #2 that you change recovery-RA-GNM-OPT-T-test.img to match the file you downloaded instead (recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img). Other than that it should be smooth sailing.

Droid Razr Maxx vs iPhone 4S

No matter what newer smartphones come out, Apple still retains a dedicated group of fans who won’t budge for anything. At what seems to be the height of the smartphone wars, Motorola has just released the successor to its Droid Razr. Welcome the Droid Razr Maxx, which is bigger but is better than the Droid Razr and practically a baby with its release last January 26, 2012. Today, we’ll see how the iPhone 4S stands up to this new release.

Army-approved winter gloves work with touchscreens

By Mark Milian, CNN
(CNN) - The U.S. Army has been working for about two years on outfitting its soldiers with smartphones, but one obstacle to this technological upgrade likely will be familiar to anybody who has tried to operate a touchscreen phone in the winter:
Smartphones and gloves do not get along.
Rather than putting government money toward developing a new type of glove, the Army went on a little shopping spree. If the government is coming late to smartphones, and buying those from stores instead of building them, then surely someone must have solved this problem.
They aren't mainstream yet, but several companies indeed sell gloves that let the wearer operate a touchscreen without taking them off. And as more people discover the limits of their Android companions on a snowy day, these types of gloves could take off.
The Army and Air Force have landed on one brand in particular: Agloves. The little-known Colorado company is up against giant brands, including North Face, and more than half a dozen other scrappy upstarts, like Dots, Echo Touch, Freehands, Power Stretch, Tavo and TouchTec.
Yet, Agloves gets the top endorsement from the Army, where a shoddy glove doesn't mean a missed call but perhaps a lost life. The Army's Fort Bliss outpost in Texas tested several models of gloves promising smartphone compatibility as part of its mobility program. Evaluators favored Agloves, and the Army has sent many pairs of them overseas to fighters.
"These technologies coming out of small companies are literally game-changers," Michael McCarthy, a technology director for the Army, said in a phone interview.

Apple readying a 7-inch iPad?

Apple readying a 7-inch iPad?
Apple is once again said to be getting a 7-inch version of its iPad ready for release, despite Steve Jobs early comments about the impractical form factor. This time the source of the rumor is Technology Business Research analyst Ezra Gottheli saying Cupertino is preparing to tablets for launch soon.

Now, we’d definitely take this with a grain of salt - it’d actually go against Apple’s own principles, and we find it hard to believe that Apple will suddenly change its opinion about smaller tablets, but it’s nonetheless possible.

Now, Gottheli specifies that the 7-inch tablet won’t arrive at the same event as the third-generation 9.7-inch iPad, and that it’s also likely to come with a tailor-made keyboard case as an accessory.

"I believe that's always been in the plan" Gottheil said despite Jobs’ vision of 7-inch tablets being too small. "Actually that's a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank."

Now, what’s your take on this, possible or not?
Seeing how the market is growing for the 7 inch pads…Sure 7 inchers are very comfortable and they are easier to take along when you compare to a 10 incher. Apple apparently wants a piece of the cake but what will we see…another stale pad, No efforts to make it look better, obligate you to buy apps from them. Don’t get me wrong…Apple is good but these are some features that have people turning heads and choosing ANDROID.

What do you think?

MIUI 4 arrives on the Kindle Fire

Amazon’s Kindle Fire being priced at $199 is a rather affordable Android tablet, which we suspect could be the reason for its high rate of adoption. This has resulted in many Android owners buying the tablet, rooting it and installing a custom ROM on it to replace the default Amazon UI that shipped with the tablet. If that is the main reason behind your purchase of the Kindle Fire, you’re in luck as MIUI 4 for the Kindle Fire has been released.

If you were a fan of the previous build of MIUI for the Kindle Fire that was based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, MIUI 4 is expected to bring the best of both worlds with it being based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The ROM will feature a UI that does not require hardware buttons, a quick settings panel, improved recent apps menu along with some MIUI-specific features such as a custom home screen, refined system panel with new themes, custom apps along with some Google apps preinstalled. Check out the video above to see the MIUI 4 in action on the Kindle Fire.

Android Phones Take A Power Trip

From: The NY Times

You know the old techie joke, right? If you don’t like the Android phones on the market, just wait a minute.
There are dozens of Android phones, and newer, better ones appear every few months. Google subscribes to the Microsoft Windows scheme: write the software, and let other companies build the phones.
The result is a lot of choice, but also a lot of fragmentation. There is no one Android phone. Some models can be updated to new Android software, some can’t. A certain app might or might not run on your particular version.
That master plan differs quite a bit from the iPhone’s.
Apple designs “the whole widget,” as Steve Jobs used to say: both the software and the phone. The result is clean, reliable and consistent — but you’re limited to the features Apple wants to give you. For example, if you want a 4G phone (one that runs on the new, very fast Internet networks in big cities), you’re out of luck.
And a new iPhone, accompanied by a major software release, comes out only once a year, or less often. In any case, there’s a lot of news in Androidland. The three biggest players are Samsung, Motorola and HTC, and all three are offering beautiful marquee Android phones. All three are Verizon 4G phones.

Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 are Waterproof?

Have you read all specs of Samsung Galaxy S III in the previous post?  From all, this would be the most exciting news of the device.  According to a news from an employee of UK retailer, Samsung Galaxy S III will be waterproof. For sure, it would be a high-end phone – iPhone 5 reportedly resist water as well.
The rumor says that the two smartphones is featured by a special nanocoating  which is impossible to get through water.
This particular technology is developed by Liquepel. We need to thanks to that manufacturer which is able to create water-proof phones even without gaining its weight and profiles. Will you now say that expensive devices like iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III might save a lot of money for careless users anywhere?
Liquipel offers you to apply the same coating for 59$ to $79. Do you think you need that to avoid your smartphones from being broken?

Invisibly Waterproof Your Phone

Last week, while covering an unrelated event in Park City, Utah, we stumbled upon a demonstration by a couple of guys from the company Liquipel, who we'd been hearing about for a few days and had been attempting to book for "This Could Be Big" since first seeing their video of an apparently waterproofed iPhone.

The video, and the subsequent coverage of it on the Internet, had boosted Liquipel's visibility through the roof, but skeptic we remained... until the guys started dunking their specially treated iPhone into a tank of water, in front of our very eyes. Incredulous, we poked, we prodded, and examined the surface of the phone, and everything remained in working order despite repeated exposure to water. Their explanations were somewhat vague, but the results seemed to be there. Of course, the kicker was when they brought out a specially treated piece of tissue paper that demonstrated the same resistance to water as their Liquipel-treated iPhone.

Convinced that there was legitimacy

Android vs iOS – Which Is Really More Stable? New Data May Surprise You

Info by phandroid

OS stability has always been a big concern when choosing which device you’re going to upgrade to. When it comes to the battle between Android and iOS, Apple fanboys would have you believe that their mobile OS is a smooth and steady as an ocean liner, but as history has taught us, some titans — sink. In my talks with friends and acquaintances on why they’ve chosen iOS over Android, I’ve heard everything from, “It just works,” to the argument that “Android is just too fragmented,” or “Apps constantly force close.”
Well, then you would assume that data gathered from Crittercism — a research startup that analyzes mobile app crashes — would show that iOS suffers from fewer, if any, app crashes when compared to Android. Right? Wrong.

, ¿Correcto? o No.

Surprisingly,  Crittercism’s data (gathered from more than 214 million app launches between November and December of 2011) shows that apps on iOS crashed much more frequently than comparable apps on Android. Just take a look at that pie graph. It’s easily dominated by iOS, covering nearly 75% of total crashes. Yup. I was just as blown away as you. Numbers don’t lie.

Now, the reasons for these app crashes are numerous. Everything from iOS 5 being new to the market, problems with hardware, internet connectivity, language support, or just plain ‘ol poorly coded apps. It can even be argued that because there are so many more iOS devices than Andr– oh, wait. I almost forgot. There isn’t.
Even with this newly released data, I almost still don’t believe it. Android. With all the talks of fragmentation, force closes and incompatible apps, could somehow turn out to be more stable than iOS? Well, slap my momma and call me Sally. Who’d-a-thunkit. Now, I’m sure this will come off as the flames of an Android fanboy but I assure you, I’m not hating. Just found this information interesting and felt like sharing. Did this data surprise any of you?

Who'd-a-thunkit. Ahora, estoy seguro de que esto salga como las llamas de un fanático de Android, pero le aseguro, no voy a odiar. Acabo de encontrar esta información interesante y me sentí como el compartir. ¿Esta sorpresa de los datos de alguno de ustedes?
